А вот как выглядит тот "ортодоксальный" подход к памяти на 440ВХ

2). 16 ram chips per module, each chip organized as 32Mx4. Because one chip has only a data width of 4 bits, all 16 chips are needed to form one ram bank. Such modules are cheaper to produce (because of the lower pin count of each ram chip), but they won't work in bx-based boards and will likely cause problems in any other chipset too, IMHO you really shouldn't buy them. They are mostly used in cheap generic ram (an exception are registered ram modules, where such chips seem to be quite common and where they shouldn't cause any problems in a board with a chipset which supports them - but unfortunately the bx does not)

Re: Can a P2B/P3B/F use 512mb SDRAM Thu, 16 Feb 2006 13:56:30
Guys that's simply not true. If a dimm is organized into
64x4, even though it has 16 chips it won't be seen at all
by a BX motherboard. Here's an example:
memoryx.net/xas5121.html

Should still be seen by the motherboard, even if (not registered) modules with x4 chips are not officially supported for _any_ intel based motherboard. Modules with 32Mx4 chips usually get recognized as 128MB, and there are a few references that 512MB with 64Mx4 chips indeed seem to get recognized as 128MB. Now, it's probably not a good idea to use such modules, the capacitive load is probably a bit high. There is some possibility it won't work at all due to the high load or not run stable. This isn't really a problem limited to bx however, really these modules are just utter crap (which is why intel won't validate them, and if you use more than 1 or 2 of them in any via based board which officially supports them it still just won't work stable). Really, the vendors which produce that crap should be forced to use 4 of them simultaneously in their daily work pcs :)
