if PS of this laptop goes to protection mode (aka short circuit protection) there is a short circuit somewhere, as you mentioned - it is very possible NB, you may check its resistance to ground from capacitors that are located on top of it to see if there are any irregularities, i would also check voltage regulator, that is located on motherboard.
